Certified Surgical First Assistant - Surgery IP 001 - Full-Time, Day - Indianapolis-8111 Township Lin - Indianapolis, IN

Shift Details:  40 hours a week.  Choice of 4/10 hour Shifts or 5/8 hour Shifts. Must be available till 5:30P M-F.  There are only Day Shifts in Women's Surgery.  If 4/10s, no set day off, must be flexible. 

CSFA Case Details:  CSFAs are only used during Davinci cases which is about %6 of the time (113/1900 cases in 2018).  The rest of the time, the CSFA would act as a CST.  Must have Robotic experience as well as Abdomanal Trocar experience (CSFA must be able to correctly insert Trocar.)

Call Rotation:  30 minute Call time.  Call rotation between 5 CSTs (currently).  Call is for Evenings, Nights and Weekends.  Emergency Cases happen on the Weekends.  2 Weekends in a 6 week period (Friday Evening through Monday morning).  Rarely called in on Weekends.  %2 Call ratio; very rare. $5 Call Pay and TIme and a Half when working.

GYN Residency Program:  Medical Students who are on track to become Doctors can participate. This Program is why there isn't more need for CSFAs.

What You Will Do

As a Surgical First Assistant with St. Vincent Health-IN, you will have the opportunity to provide direct assistance to surgeons during surgical procedures.


  • Positions patient to give best exposure for surgical procedure, using stabilizing equipment when necessary, while maximizing patient comfort and safety.
  • Provides visualization of the operative site using appropriate method, including manipulation of tissue and materials, retraction, sponging, suctioning and irrigation.
  • Utilizes appropriate technique to achieve temporary and permanent hemostasis.
  • Assists with body plane closure, application of wound dressings and securing of drainage systems.
  • Assist in room clean up and the removal of the soiled case cart, supplies, and trash from OR room as needed at the completion of the surgical case.
  • Participates as a surgical team member in the preparation of the surgical suite according to surgeon's preference cards with appropriate instruments, resources and supplies.

What You Will Need

  • Required Credential(s):
    • BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date. 
    • One or more of the following:
      • Surgical Assistant credentialed from the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. 
      • Surgical Assistant credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. 
  • Diploma 
    • High school diploma/GED with 2 years of experience, or Associate's degree, or Technical degree required
