What You Will Do

As an associate with Ascension Michigan, you will have the opportunity to assist the surgical team to provide patient care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Demonstrates increasing knowledge of physical and technical requirements of surgical intervention: Moderately complex procedures, advancing knowledge of instrumentation-specialty sets. Demonstrates increasing knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Ability to scrub more than one specialty proficiently. Willingness to assist circulator. Responsible for maintaining effective communication skills. Participates in monitoring and maintaining resources in specific department. Understands and contributes to the vision/mission and goals of the department. Works in a secure department with access to areas where medications are stored. Handles and labels medications on the sterile field under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs decontamination of soiled instruments, sterilization containers and equipment according to established protocols.
  • Follows the aseptic technique standard within the surgical setting and corrects any break in technique.
  • Arranges operating room equipment and supplies following surgeon's preference card and procedure requirements.
  • Follows policy and procedure standards for sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  • Receives, prepares and maintains tissue and lab specimens for pathology.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all specialty areas, roles and responsibilities of the Surgical Technologist in the surgical setting.

What You Will Need

Licenses/Certifications/Registration:

  • Required Credential(s):
    • BLS Provider obtained within 3 Months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date. BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 3 Months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
    • Surgical Tech credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) obtained within 12 Months (1 year) of hire date or job transfer date. Certified Surgical Tech credentialed from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) obtained within 12 months (one year) of hire date or job transfer date.

Education:

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Completion of an approved Surgical Technologist program prior to hire date or job transfer date required

Work Experience:

  • None required.
