What You Will Do

The Advanced Practice Practitioner works interdependently with and independently within the health care team.    The Advanced Practice Practitioner in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, with the collaboration of PICU Physicians, manages patients in this high-acuity specialized setting. Daily responsibilities include:  

Patient history and physical examination. • Diagnosis and patient management including ordering and prescribing of medications and treatments: • Orders and interprets necessary diagnostic and/or therapeutic tests. • Patient consultation and referrals • Procedures • Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies care plan as necessary to achieve desired outcomes • Discharge planning.  • Consults as needed with other health care professionals, patients, and families in the formulation and initiation of the health care plan • Evaluates the outcome of the patient consultation and modifies recommendations as needed to facilitate restoration of health • Utilization of advanced knowledge to provide clinical leadership to other health care professionals through mentoring, education, and clinical consultation.  The role of the Advanced Practice Provider in the Critical Care setting is essential in the delivery of patient care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Accordingly, the Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider schedule includes a variable shift commitment with a rotation of days/nights/holidays/weekends. 


  • Obtains patient history and performs assessment via observation, interview and examination. Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic studies. Performs preventative health assessments, screening, immunizations and patient care.
  • Provides direct treatment and management of health conditions via prescriptive authority or referral to other healthcare providers or community resources.
  • Counsels and educates patients and their families/caregivers concerning preventative health, treatment options and community resources.
  • Documents delivery of health care and nursing processes in accordance with specific specialty area standards and network nursing policy.

What You Will Need

Physician Assistant

Required Credential(s):

• BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 3 Months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date.

• Licensed Physician Assistant credentialed from the Texas Medical Board.

• Certified Physician Assistant credentialed from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

Preferred Credential(s):

• Advanced Life Support credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA).


• Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program

• Master's degree preferred

Nurse Practitioner

Required Credential(s):

• Nurse Practitioner credentialed from the Texas Board of Nursing.

• Acute Care Certification already obtained

• Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Texas Board of Nursing.

Preferred Credential(s):

• BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA).

• Drug Enforcement Admin credentialed from the Drug Enforcement Administration.


• Master's degree of Nursing required

Work Experience for both PA and APRN:

  • 2 years plus of experience as an advanced practice practitioner, preferred

  • 2 years plus of prior work experience in Pediatric Critical Care or Acute Care Pediatrics strongly preferred
