What You Will Do

The Medical Technologist IV is responsible for supporting the Mission and Vision of Crittenton Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) by, under general supervision, working closely with the Section Head by assisting in the management and supervision of the Section. Works toward the effective coordination of personnel and all other resources of the performance of serological and microbiological tests. Assists in investigation of all abnormal results from patients of al ages before such data is released to the physician customer. Participates in the performance of quality control procedures, maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and coordination of resources in the absence of the Section Head. Assists in ensuring accuracy of data output. Participates in teaching of new employees and in any teaching program as needed. Helps ensure Section operates within established Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures for specimens from patients of all age groups. Keeps Section Head informed of any problems with respect to personnel, equipment, procedures, supplies, safety issues, quality control and communications with physician customers, nurses or patients. Assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Section Head in his/her absence. Promotes a positive working environment and maintains professional conduct in that Section. Promotes a positive image for the Laboratory and the Hospital both internally and publicly with customers of all ages.


  • Essential Functions
  • Assists Section Head in the coordination of personnel and all other resources for the timely, efficient, accurate precise performance of the Section. Participates in the performance of testing. Assists Section Head in troubleshooting of equipment failures and maintenance of equipment. Maintains confidentiality in the processing of specimens and handling of all laboratory data.
  • Assists in the investigation of abnormal results for their validity and reliability. Assists in communicating abnormal test results to physicians and nursing staff.
  • Assists in the maintenance of quality control procedures. Assists in the maintenance of equipment, Q.C. and supply inventory.
  • Assists in reviewing all procedures and procedure manuals and participates in their revision. Makes knowledgeable recommendations for the implementation of new procedures and assists in their preparation.
  • Makes knowledgeable recommendations for the acquisition of new equipment. Keeps abreast of new theoretical knowledge and technical innovations.
  • Assists in the general supervision of the section, and in the planning, organization and delineation of employee duties and responsibilities. Assumes the day to day operational duties and responsibilities of the Section head in his/her absence.
  • Non-Essential Functions
  • Assists in the planning, coordination, supervision and teaching of new employees and other in-service teaching programs. Recommends changes where necessary. Participates in nursing in-services as necessary.
  • Assists in the establishment and maintenance of cooperative and harmonious relationships with staff, patients, and all others by demonstrating needs-oriented behavior. Demonstrates effective, courteous, and tactful communication skills through active listening techniques and tactful oral/written feedback.
  • When necessary, employing standard precautions, collects inpatient, outpatient and ER specimens by venipuncture or capillary puncture using aseptic techniques. Observes established safety measures to minimize hazards to self and others.
  • Performs all duties while adhering to Crittenton Hospital Hospitality guidelines and policies, as well as established Laboratory policies.
  • May on occasion act as chairperson or member of a laboratory-related committee or any other process improvement committee.
  • Assists with planning, coordinating and implementing workflow toward the efficient and timely production of appropriately processed stained slides for review by a Pathologist. Assists in preparing easy to understand written, concise and accurate procedures, technical manuals and teaching materials. Clerical ability to organize data for meaningful, legible, accurate statistical reports.
  • This position involves access and disclosure of personal health information secondary to CHMC operations related to quality and outcomes management. Use and disclosure of personal health information on a “need to know basis” may be necessary for purposes of treatment, payment and hospital operations. Disclosure and/or use of personal health information for any purpose other than as reasonably necessary for designated job responsibilities is prohibited.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • This position requires the ability to identify age related differences within the persons served and the adjustment of treatment style and expectations as appropriate, including adjustments based on the person’s served cognitive function and learning ability. This will include taking into account their religious and cultural needs and preferences.

What You Will Need

  • Required Credential(s):
    • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certification at time of hire/transfer date required.
  • Bachelor's Level Degree 
    • Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or a BS Degree in a related field required
Work Experience:
  • One to two years experience required in a clinical laboratory setting required. Working ability to perform all clinical procedures and techniques. Microbiology: Molecular experience preferred.
