1 Medical, Oncology at Lourdes, Ascension is hiring a Technician, Patient Care to working Part Time, 48 hours per period, evening shift with benefits! 

As our Patient Care Technician/Certified Nursing Assistant/Nursing Assistant, you are the “front-line!” You are the one team member who patients remember because you spend many hours of direct care with them!

This position plays a key role in the care of our patients as you assist them with their daily living activities.  You will work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and through this collaborative patient care environment, you will have the ability to impact the care our patients receive. Your great care of our patients will lead to more positive outcomes for you and your patients.

 Lourdes Oncology Unit, 1 Medical, is our Oncology/Hospice/Medical-Surgical 28 bed unit which consists of 16 beds on our Ross wing, and 12 beds on our West wing (including two hospice suites). Our unit has all private beds for our patients. Our tech ratios range from 1:10 patients on day shift, 1:10 on Evenings, and 1:12-1:16 on night shift. Our unit utilizes Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Patient Care Assistants (PCAs), and Unit Secretaries who work closely alongside our Registered Nurses (RNs) to help with tasks throughout their day. We use Cerner as our electronic medical record. Our team works closely with our hospitalists, oncologists, radiation therapy team, palliative care team, and local hospice organizations to provide quality, holistic, care to all the patients we serve. Our unit follows a shared governance model utilizing a Unit Based Practice Council that meets monthly to discuss quality improvement initiatives for the department. 

Lourdes, based in Binghamton, New York, is dedicated to spiritually centered, holistic care which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities. The main hospital campus includes medical, surgical and specialty nursing units, an Ambulatory Care Center, Breast Care Center, a Regional Cancer Center and numerous specialty practices. Reaching beyond the main hospital campus, Lourdes has established a network of primary care providers at 12 convenient sites throughout the region; and the Lourdes at Home and Hospice programs which care for patients in their homes and various nursing facilities. Two mobile mammography vans, a dental van and a medical services van deliver health services out into the region, making health care more easily accessible to surrounding communities.

What You Will Do

As an Associate with Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital you will work as part of our patient care team which consists of RNs, LPNs, patient-care technicians and unit secretaries. You and your patients will benefit from a multi-disciplinary support team which includes social work, case management, spiritual care, nutrition, pharmacy and respected members of our medical staff.  Job responsibilities include giving care and comfort to patients by attending to their personal needs, ensuring their safety, mobility and general wellbeing. Keeping all information about clients’ health highly confidential as a sign of respect for their privacy. Personal care assistants exhibit great strength and endurance in the course of duty as the job entails standing for long hours, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, walking etc. to adequately provide comfort to clients. Some specific tasks you will perform include:

  • Aids with entry and exit of patients.
  • Assists patients with toileting, bathing and dressing
  • Assist patients in ambulating and getting out of bed
  • Use assistive devices and safety equipment (smartMOVES) to transfer patients
  • Assist patients with eating, setting up of meal trays, supplements/snacks, and documentation of amounts tolerated 
  • Perform EKGs, vital signs and document in electronic record
  • Perform EKGs, vital signs and document in electronic medical record
  • Report any behaviors or changes in condition observed in patients to their RN for intervention
  • Responsible for keeping patient rooms clean and orderly as well as maintaining medical equipment.

What You Will Need

Licenses/Certifications/Registration:

  • Required Credential(s):
    • BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date. 

Education:

  • Diploma 
    • High school diploma or GED preferred

Work Experience:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) desired. 
  • Experience working in a team environment is essential. 
  • Computer skills required and prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. 
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call. 

     

    Will need to demonstrate ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Must demonstrate leadership skills, skills contributing towards a positive teamwork environment, effective communication, and excellent critical thinking skills.
