Customer Service Representative - Patient Accounting - Full-Time, Days - Lourdes Business Center - Binghamton,NY

Schedule:  Monday - Friday, Shift can vary from 7:30am - 4:00pm to 9:00am - 5:30pm; must be flexible to cover varying hours if assigned.

This full-time position is eligible for benefits including medical, dental and vision insurance; retirement savings plan with employer match; tuition assistance and much more. You will work out of our centralized call center location on Lewis Road in Binghamton.

What You Will Do

As a Customer Service Representative with Lourdes Hospital, you will have the opportunity to determine and verify insurance coverage and coordination of benefits from all sources for the assigned area. You will interact with patients by phone and in person to explain, troubleshoot and/or accept payments for balances on patient accounts.

Responsibilities:

  • Answers patient calls in a professional, respectful and caring manner resolving questions, issues and accepting payments regarding healthcare billing claims. 

  • Learns all aspects of healthcare processed claims; how to read, understand and interpret explanations of benefits.  

  • Confirms insurance coverage. Determines necessity for pre-authorization and confirms if authorization has been completed. 

  • Determines financial responsibility for services provided. Notifies patients and/or practitioners of any services that are not authorized by insurance.

  • Communicates with patients and practitioners regarding financial responsibility and insurance coverage issues.

  • Maintains detailed documentation in the patient account record of all billing activities. Maintains documentation of claims processed as part of the daily claims reconciliation process.

  • Understands and can explain claims for commercial insurance companies, third party organizations and/or government or self payers.

  • Researches, analyzes and interprets Medicare/Medicaid billing and reimbursement practices.

  • Maintains detailed documentation in the patient account record of all billing activities. Maintains documentation of interaction with patients resulting from calls to/from the customer service queue. 

  • Consults with appropriate parties to resolve unbilled claims, alleged incorrect claims and/or coding issues, expressed care issues, HIPAA issues or any other patient concerns expressed in their calls to the CS queue.  Reviews related accounts for proper billing practices and reimbursement.

What You Will Need

Education:

  • Diploma: High school diploma or GED preferred

Work Experience:

  • None required.

  • Experience in at least 1 of the following areas strongly preferred: Healthcare billing knowledge, Customer Service experience, Call Center experience.
